One Week Until “Avatar” Changes My Game
“Avatar” is currently screening for critics, and being that I’m apparently chopped liver, I still have to wait until 12:01 a.m. next Friday morning to catch the fillum at the ArcLight Dome (in 3D). What’s the ticket price for said presentation, you ask? Oh, it’s a steal at $17.50.
Critics are embargoed until the day of release before they can publish their reviews. But some are Tweeting their early reactions, which seem to generally be positive. Drew McWeeney from HitFix wrote “OMFG” a whole bunch of times, a critical analysis that puts Pauline Kael’s finest work to shame.
My anticipation for the film is building. There hasn’t been a big-budget popcorn flick this year that’s really blown me out of my seat. I enjoyed “Star Trek” and “G.I. Joe” last summer, but my reactions to both were mixed-positive. I want to see an actioner that I enjoy without reservations.
Geeks have been debating endlessly on the Internet about how this film will be received upon wide release. Will this be another “Titanic” and play well into next spring, earning hundreds upon hundreds of millions of dollars? Or will its gross fall short of its rumored $500 million production budget? Either way, who cares?
Whether or not this is James Cameron’s “Heaven’s Gate” is completely irrelevant to me. If the movie underperforms at the box office, it’s no skin off my nose. All’s I want is the movie to work for me. Worrying about if it plays in Peoria should be the concern of the bean counters at 20th Century Fox.
I dunno. I’m a fan of James Cameron. He’s stumbled a couple of times, and I’m a little concerned that he’s taken too much time off and maybe lost his touch. I guess I’ll find out a week from now.
