pwz“Punisher: War Zone” opens on Friday, and the geek community has done a complete 180 on the film. Devin at CHUD.com gave it an 8.5 out of 10 and said on the message board that he enjoyed the film more than “The Dark Knight.” That being said, in TDK the Joker stabs someone through the eyeball with a pencil, but in PWZ, Punny shoves a chair leg through someone’s peeper. Based upon that criteria alone, clearly “Punisher: War Zone” is the Best Picture of 2008.

I’ve been looking forward to this film all along, believe it or not. I dig the Punisher — always have. The early buzz for the film was ungood, and I found myself preparing for the worst. But now it sounds like this movie is exactly what it should be: 107 minutes of comic book ultraviolence. Count me in.

It’s odd that this is the third “Punisher” movie, and the filmmakers seem like they finally have a handle on the character. I’m not sure why he looks like he’s wearing a neck brace, but whatever. Ray Stevenson bears a pretty striking resemblance to the Punisher in the comics. So what if he looks like he was rear-ended?

And then there’s Jigsaw. It’s rare that Punny confronts a repeat-offender. Jigsaw’s one of those very few big bads who survived an encounter with the Punisher and definitely looks the part. Apparently in the film, Jigsaw’s origin has him taking a spill into a glass crusher — whee!

I was planning on seeing this Saturday afternoon, but I’ve got to put this in my eyes Friday night instead. I guess it could be said that I’m a sucker for punishment!
